How I Learned WordPress

A small introduction

Wordpress

About me

My name is Maurri Kone and I am a WordPress addict. No, I know Codementor is not some kind of therapy group but I think that what really describes me the most. Born and raised in Ivory Coast (West Africa), I moved to Ghana when I was just 22. Came to learn English, I was able to improve my knowledge in IT in that country especially in Web design, Web development, Computer Networks.

Why I wanted to learn WordPress

I learned WordPress just after I finished my English classes as I was so passioned with Blogging at that time. Then I came to notice that WordPress is not only a blogging platform, It was also so much more that. News, Construction, Business, Wedding, Photography, etc. WordPress is used to create websites about any fields possible.

How I approached learning WordPress

First, I learned the basics by watching Youtube Videos online and repeating the people. When I was able to master them, I started to create blog websites for friends and trained them on how to use. It was a good way to impregnate the basics in me also. Then, a friend of mine asked me one day to create a normal brochure website. It was something new to me as I was used to create blogs but I decided to do my best. I did it and It was much better than I expected. I continue creating websites as a freelancer and then I was approached by a local IT company to fill a position as a Web Developer in their company. While working there, I was able to progress as I was facing new challenges.

Challenges I faced

In the beginning, I found difficult to understand PHP and Javascript. When I was hired, I had to take online classes to understand coding and to edit plugins.
At the same time, I had no knowledge of UI/UX design. I had never worked with software like Photoshop or Illustrator. I had to train myself to master them with Youtube.
As in HTML and CSS, I already had an experience in High School with those languages.

Key takeaways

It was great to go through all those processes to be where I am today. It made me a better developer. WordPress also benefits from a very large community and a beginner can easily learn from people only if they really look into.

Tips and advice

The advice I can give to future devs who want to learn WordPress is to be passionate about what they do. Nothing is easy but with focus and hard work, you can be one of the best.

Final thoughts and next steps

It is a good journey so far after 5 years and I’m still looking to progress. The next step now is to create WordPress themes and make them accepted by Themeforest.
